Exercise Indra 2018 is the tenth edition of joint military exercise between India and Russia. The exercise was held at Babina Field Firing Ranges, Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh). The military exercise is aimed at increasing the interoperability between Indian and Russian armed forces.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was approved in July by all United Nations members except USA . It is because of the huge influx of migrants in the recent past due to conflicts, civil war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and beyond. The non-binding UN pact addresses issues such as how to protect people who migrate, how to integrate them into new countries and how to return them to their home countries. Many European Union countries have refused to sign the UN pact which includes Bulgaria. Austria, Hungary and Czech among others. These countries are refusing to sign the pact because they are favouring the principle of separating legal and illegal migration.

The country's communication satellite GSAT 29 will be launched into the geostationary transfer orbit on November, 14. RCEP trade ministers are expected to meet in Singapore on November 12-13 to fasttrack the talks for the proposed mega trade deal at the earliest. India's concerns include - lowering or eliminating duties for China will flood Indian markets with Chinese goods which will adversely affect domestic industries, India's trade deficit with 10 countries in the group is also a concern. Also India is expecting liberalised norms for service sector (which will benefit India's service industy). Several other issues concerning other countries in the group will also be discussed. RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) is a regional trade pact covering goods, services, investments, economic and technical cooperation, competition and intellectual property rights.

Artillery Gun Systems M777 Howitzers and K9 Vajra have been inducted into the Indian Army. The guns will be crucial assets for the army along the borders with China and India. The M777 ultra light howitzer can be easily transported to high altitude areas by Chinook helicopters. Another addition is 'Composite Gun Tractor' for towing some of the existing guns in service. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has decided to increase Tejas production from its new production facility at Nashik, which is expected to be operational by 2020. The target is to double the production of Tejas fighters to 16 from 8 per year. The Union Government has decided to privatise 6 airports - Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mangaluru,Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. The operation, management and development of these airports through public-private partnership (PPP) model are expected to improve the quality of airports. INS Arihant - India's first indigenous nuclear submarine completes first deterrence patrol. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently launched MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) Support and Outreach Programme which includes access to credit, access to market, technology upgradation, ease of doing business and sense of security for employees.The programme will run for 100 days covering 100 districts throughout the country. It includes 59 minute loan portal for easy access to credit i.e. loan upto 1 crore will be granted in-principle approval in just 59 minutes. It also includes 2% interest subvention for all GST registered MSMEs on loans. India is part of the list of nations that faces grave threat to soil biodiversity as per the Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas prepared by the World Wide Fund for Nature. The reasons for threat include pollution, over-grazing,nutrient overloading, intensive agriculture, fire, soil erosion, desertification and climate change. Soil biodiversity includes presence of micro-organisms, micro-fauna (nematodes, tardigrades) and macro-fauna (ants, termites and earthworms). According to the report, the two key drivers of biodiversity loss were the overexploitation of natural resources and agriculture. The findings were part of the Living Planet Report 2018, a bi-annual report of World Wide Fund for Nature.

Prime Minister dedicated National Police Memorial to the nation on October 21 which is observed as 'Police Commemoration Day' every year in memory of the policemen killed at Hot Springs in Ladakh by the Chinese troops in 1959. The memorial has been built in recognition of the supreme sacrifice made by the police since independence. The central sculpture of the National Police Memorial is a 30-feet monolith made of a single piece of granite, weighing 238 tonnes. Its weight and colour symbolise the gravitas and solemnity of the supreme sacrifice. The memorial represents all State/UT police forces and central police organisations of the country. The memorial is erected in Delhi's Chanakyapuri and the Wall of Valour has the names of all 34,844 martyrs engraved on granite. The memorial also has the country's first National Police Museum which captures history, artefacts uniform and gear of central and state police forces.
India and China has recently signed their maiden internal security cooperation agreement which also includes intelligence sharing to tackle terrorism.The pact includes setting up mechanism for cooperation between internal security establishments of India and China for the first time. AG600/Kunlong China's indigenously built amphibious aircraft has successfully completed its first take-off and landing on water. AG600 considered to be the world's largest amphibious aircraft. Uttar Pradesh cabinet has decided to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj. "Prayag is a confluence of two rivers. Here we have a confluence of three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Hence its name will be Prayagraj", the chief Minister said. The name Prayagraj would be used to promote Indian culture.
The Centre has come up with a new pollution forecast system which forecast the state of the air 72 hours (3 days) in advance. The air quality early warning system is based on real time observations of air quality. The prediction system gives details of natural aerosols and particulate matter. The information regarding the air quality can be obtained by people through the Central Pollution Control Board website. The system has been designed to predict extreme air pollution events.

According to the report , prepared by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide, India is among the 45 countries that have 'serious levels of hunger'. The World Bank has recently released its first ever report on Human Capital Index. India is placed at the 115th position on the report which ranked 157 countries on parameters like child mortality, health and education. The finance Ministry has rejected the report saying that the Human Capital Index score for India does not reflect the key initiatives that are being taken for developing human capital in the country.

The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) by merging National Council for Vocational Training and National Skill Development Agency. The NCVET will regulate the functioning of entities engaged in vocational education and training and establish minimum standards for the functioning of such entities.It will be headed by a Chairperson and will have executive and non-executive members. The initiative is expected to achieve the twin objective of enhancing aspirational value of vocational education and increasing skilled manpower aimed at making India the skill capital of the world. The exercise aims at strengthening interoperability, improve understanding and imbibe best practices between navies of two countries.The exercise was started in 2012 with special focus on maritime security cooperation.
William D Nordhaus (USA) and Paul M Romer (USA) were awarded the 50th Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for innovation, climate and economic growth. William was recognised for his work on climate economics and Romer was recognised for his work on endogenous growth theory.
India defeated Sri Lanka to win the Under-19 Asia Cup for the record sixth time. This is the fourth time India defeated Sri Lanka in the final to win the tournament (India captained by Prab Simran Singh). India earlier had won the Under-19 World Cup in February, 2018.
India defeated West Indies (first test- third day- Rajkot, Gujarat) by an innings and 272 runs, registering their biggest ever Test match victory. India had earlier defeated Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs in June, 2018. This win is India's 100th Test victory at home, becoming the fourth nation to reach the landmark (other three - Australia, England and South Africa). Also, Prithvi Shaw who scored maiden hundred, became the 6th Indian to be named Man of the Match on Test debut.
The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Denis Mukwege (Congo) and Nadia Murad (Iraq) for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapn of warfare. Murad is a victim of abuse by ISIS and Mukwege a gynaecologist has repeatedly condemned impunity for mass rape.
"Sahyog HOP TAC -2018" - first ever joint exercise of Coast Guards of India and Vietnam. It was held in the Bay of Bengal off the Chennai coast, Tamil Nadu. The objective is to strengthen the working level relationship between the coast guards of both navies.
National Dolphin Research Centre will be set up on the banks of river Ganga in Patna (Bihar).The announcement was made on the occasion of Dolphin Day (October 5).It will be India's and Asia's first dolphin research centre playing an important role in strengthening conservation efforts and research to save the endangered mammal (Bihar is home to half of the dolphin population in India which is estimated at 3000).
Operation Samudra Maitri is a humanitarian operation launched by India to provide assistance to earthquake and tsunami victims in Indonesia.Under this operation , India has despatched two aircrafts C-130J and C-17 and three naval ships INS Tir, INS Sujatha and INS Shardul carrying relief material and personnel to the country.
Arthur Ashkin (USA), Gerard Mourou (France) and Donna Strickland (Canada) were selected for the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2018. They were selected for grounbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics. Arthur Ashkin received the prize for optical tweezers and their application to biological systems. Arthur Ashkin at 96 is the oldest winner of any Nobel prize. Gerard Mourou and Donna Strickland were awarded for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses. Their innovative technique is known as 'chirped pulse amplification'. Donna Strickland became the third woman to receive Nobel prize in Physics.
Three scientists shared this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry for tapping the power of evolutionary biology to design molecules with a range of practical uses. Half of the prize went to Frances H.Arnold (USA) for the directed evolution of enzymes. She is only the fifth woman to win a chemistry Nobel. The other half of the prize is shared by George P.Smith (USA) and Gregory P.Winter (UK) for the phage display of peptides and antibodies.
Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a century on debut (in a test match) against West Indies in Rajkot. Prithvi Shaw at 18 years , 329 days is now also the second youngest Indian ever to score a test century, after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar (17 years, 107 days). Shaw took 99 balls to get to his maiden test century and became the thrid batsman to hit debut ton under 100 balls (the other two are Shikhar Dhawan - 85 balls and Dwayne Smith - 93 balls).
IBSAMAR - VI is a joint multi-national maritime exercise between India, Brazil and South Africa Navies. It was held in Simons Town - South Africa. The objective of this exercise is to undertake collective training for participating navies, building interoperability and mutual understanding as well as sharing of best practices.
Supreme Court Judge Madan Bhimarao Lokur was appionted as Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority of India (NALSA).NALSA provides free legal aid inter-alia to all persons in custody. NALSA was constituted under Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. NALSA also provides free legal aid for poor and marginalised people in civil and criminal matters who cannot afford services of lawyer. NALSA also organises Lok Adalats for amicable and speedy settlement of disputes.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2018 is jointly awarded to American James P. Allison and Japanese Tasuku Honjo. They were awarded for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation. In other words they discovered how to harness and manipulate the immune system to fight cancer. James P.Allison studied a protein that functions as a brake on the immune system. He realised the potential of releasing the brake and unleashing our immune cells to attack tumours. He developed this concept into a new approach for treating patients. Tasuku Honjo discovered a protein on immune cells and revealed that it also operates as a brake, but with a different mechanism of action. Therapies based on his discovery proved to be strikingly effective in the fight against cancer.

Typhoon Trami, the powerful storm hits Japan causing widespread disruptions. The typhoon made landfall near the western city of Osaka , with gusts of up to 216km/h. The typhoon comes less than a month after the country's strongest storm in 25 years (Typhoon Jebi in early september) hit western Japan.
The governemnt has formed a Competition Law Review Committee to ensure that the legislation is in tune with the changing business environment. The committee will also study the international best practices in the competition field with a thrust on anti-trust laws, merger guidelines, handling cross-border competition issues, other regulatory regimes, institutional mechanisms and government policies which overlap with the Competition Act. The nine member committee will be headed by Corporate Affairs Secretary, Injeti Srinivas.
Microsoft has announced an experimental release of "Robot Operating System (ROS 1)" for Windows as a next step in bringing features like Machine Learning, computer vision, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud services and other microsoft technologies to home, education, commercial and industrial robots. The announcement comes as part of the "ROSCon 2018" that is being held in Madrid, Spain.With the advancements of robots, microsoft plans to experiment into advanced development tools.
The tsunami triggered by earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit the Sulawesi island of Indonesia resulting in huge loss of life and property. The city of Palu was worst affected. Injeti Srinivas High-Level Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been set up by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The committee will review the existing framework and guide and formulate a roadmap for the coherent policy on corporate social responsibility. The committee will analyze outcomes of CSR activities, programmes and projects and suggest measures for effective monitoring and evaluation of CSR by companies.

Russia has for the first time test-fired a P-800 Onyx / Oniks supersonic anti-ship cruise missile during a military exercise amid escalating tensions with Israel following the downing of a Russian warplane in Syria. The launch was from the K-300P Bastion-P, a mobile coastal missile defence system that has been deployed to the Kotelny island in the Arctic.

Astra missile was successfully test fired by Indian Air Force from Su-30 fighter aircraft. Astra was beyond visual range air-to-air missile indigenously developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is a single stage solid fuelled missile and has payload capacity of 15kg conventional explosives.It is all-weather radar homing supersonic missile having maximum speed of Mach 4 (four times the speed of the sound). It can be launched from different altitudes and is capable of engaging targets at varying range and altitudes at both short-range targets (up to 20 km) in tail-chase mode and long-range targets (up to 80 km) in head-on mode.
India to ship first consignment of non Basmati rice to China. 100 tonnes of non Basmati rice will be sent to China from Nagpur and received by China National Cereals, Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation. India has been pitching for market access for a variety of its goods to China in a move to bridge the widening trade deficit and sugar, rice and pharmaceuticals have been high on the agenda.
WAYU stands for Wind Augmentation PurifYing Unit. WAYU, the pollution control device inagurated in New Delhi for traffic junctions(the device aims at tackling toxicity in air by sucking in particulate matter and release fresh air). It is developed by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute as part of Technology Development Project being funded by Department of Science and Technology of Governemnt of India.
The government has initiated discussions with Public Sector Banks (PSBs) for the second round of capital infusion. All the banks have asked for recapitalisation programme to be advanced. The infusion was part of Rs 65,000 crore out of Rs2.11 lakh crore capital infusion over two financial years. The government announced the Rs 2.11 lakh crore capital infusion programme october last year. As per the plan, the PSBs were to get Rs 1.35 lakh crore through re-capitalisation bonds and the balance through raising of capital from the market.
Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance will release an Annual Financial Inclusion Index (FII) which will be a measure of access and usage of a basket of formal financial products and services that includes savings, remittances, credit, insurance and pension products. The index will have three measurement dimensions - 1.) access to financial services, 2.)usage of financial services and 3.)quality. The single composite index gives idea about level of financial inclusion that would guide macro policy perspective. It will also help to measure financial services for use of internal policy making. FII can also be used directly as a composite measure in development indicators. It enables fulfilment of G20 Financial Inclusion Indicators requirements. It will also facilitate researchers to study the impact of financial inclusion and other macro-economic variables.
India wants Bangladesh to consider negotiating a free trade agreement including goods, services and investment to promote two-way commerce and investments. After Bangladesh graduates from the Least Developed Country status, it will no longer have duty-free and quota-free access for its products to the Indian market under SAFTA (South Asia Free Trade Agreement). The two-way trade between the two countries stands at $9.3 billion in 2017-18.
Pakyong airport is Sikkim's first airport. This is also the 100th operational airport in the country which will enhance regional connectivity.It is a greenfield airport constructed at an altitude of 1,120m at a cost of Rs 605 crore. Sikkim was the last state without any airport. The airport is strategically important from the defence point of view as it is within 60km of the border with China.
The World Bank Group (WBG) has approved a $25-30 billion commitment plan for India for the 2019-22 period. The new Country Partnership Framework (CPF) , endorsed by the WBG board of executive directors focuses on the development priorities of the country - resource efficient and inclusive growth, job creation and building its human capital. The WBG institution comprises of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).
Assamese film Village Rockstars has been selected as India's official entry to the 91st Academy Awards (Oscars), 2019. The film directed by Rima Das won the National Award for Best Feature Film. Addressing the issues of women empowerment and gender inequality, the film follows a rebellious and a ambitious young girl, Dhunu (played by Bhanita Das), who dreams of rising above poverty, owning a guitar and forming her own rock band.
Hayabusa-2 of Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) arrived at the asteroid 162173 Ryugu in June. MINERVA-II 1 is a compact rover consisting of two rovers . On September 21, the MINERVA-II 1 rovers separated from the Hayabusa-2 spacecraft. The separated rovers have landed on the surface of asteroid Ryugu. The two rovers are in good condition and are transmitting images and data. MINERVA-II 1 is therefore 'the world's first man-made object /rover to land on the surface of an asteroid'. This is also the first time for autonomous movement and picture capture on an asteroid surface.

Cyclone-30 is India's biggest cyclotron facility which became operational at Kolkata-based Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, which comes under Department of Atomic Energy. Cyclotron is used to produce radioisotopes for diagnostic and therapeutic use for cancer care. Radiations from thses isotopes are used to destroy cancer cells.
Considering the change in employment pattern and the current scenario of employment in India which has transformed from a long term employment to fixed short term engagement in the form of contract and temping Employee's State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has approved a scheme named "Atal Bimit Vyakti Kalyan Yojna" for Insured Persons covered under the Employee's State Insurance Act, 1948, for a period of 2 years continuously. This scheme is a relief payable in cash directly to their bank account in case unemployment and while they search for new engagement.Under this scheme, the workers will be able to draw 47% of their total contributions towards ESIC after remaining unemployed for atleast three months from date of leaving their previous jobs. They can choose to receive the cash at one go or in instalments.It will be applicable to all factories and establishments employing at least 10 workers.
A deep depression in the west-central Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm, Daye. The storm crossed the coast near Gopalpur in Odisha in midnight. The cyclone has resulted in heavy downpour in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
SpaceX (aerospace company) will fly Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa as the first ever private tourist to the moon. Big Falcon Rocket will be used for the mission.The mission is expected to launch in 2023.

Exercise Aviaindra-18 is airforce joint exercise between India and Russia held bi-annually (twice a year) in both the countries (first started in 2014). It will be held from September 17 to 28, 2018 in Lipetsk, Russia. The second session will be held from December 10 to 22, 2018 in Jodhpur, India.
