NITI Aayog has ranked the states with respect to management of water. This is a first-of-its-kind exercise.The composite water index scores - High performance (score > 65), Medium performance (score 50-65) and Low performance (score < 50). Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh took the top three spots.Jharkhand, Haryana, UP and Bihar are the worst performers. The composite water management index comprises of 9 parameters and 28 indicators. These indicators include among others groundwater restoration, restoration of water bodies, irrigation management, on-farm water use, drinking water supply, water policy and governance.
NITI Aayog has warned that India is facing its worst ever water crisis. If proper and timely steps are not taken ,the demand for water will exceed supply by 2030.This has serious implications for India's food security.
