Defence Industrial Corridors are part of the centre's efforts to develop specialised zones dedicated to defence production. When the 'Make in India' initiative was launched in 2014 to transform India into a global design and manufacturing hub, Defence Manufacturing was identified as one of the 25 key sectors. The announcement of setting up two corridors- one in Tamil Nadu and other in Uttar Pradesh- exclusively for defence manufacturing in 2018-2019 Union Budget is a logical continuum to this policy of the Government. The Tamil Nadu Defence Corridor, also called the Tamil Nadu Defence Production Quad as the nodal cities form a quadrilateral, will include Chennai, Hosur, Salem, Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli as nodes. For the corridor in Uttar Pradesh, six nodal points have been identified - Agra, Aligarh, Lucknow, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Jhansi.
